Schema Markup for Small Business Websites: What Is Worth Adding

Schema markup, also called structured data, is code on your pages that states facts in a standard format: your business name, address, hours, services, articles and more. It helps search engines and AI assistants read those facts reliably, and some types can make your listing more detailed in search results.

Worth adding for most small businesses

1. Organization or LocalBusiness on the home and contact pages: name, logo, address or service area, phone, hours and links to your official profiles.
2. Service on each service page: what the service is and where it is offered.
3. BreadcrumbList on inner pages, so the page's place in the site is clear.
4. Article or BlogPosting on blog posts, with author and dates.

Use with care

• FAQPage. Google now shows FAQ rich results mainly for authoritative government and health sites, so most businesses will not get the enhanced listing. Marking up genuine FAQs can still help machines read your answers.
• Review and rating markup. Only for genuine reviews shown on the page, following Google's rules. Never mark up reviews you wrote yourself.

Rules that matter

• Mark up only what is visible on the page.
• Keep facts identical to your Google Business Profile and other listings.
• Update the markup when hours, services or prices change.

Use Google's Rich Results Test and the Schema.org validator on your key pages, and watch for structured data errors in Google Search Console.
