What llms.txt Is and Whether Your Website Needs One

llms.txt is a proposed convention: a plain-text Markdown file at the root of your website, at /llms.txt, that summarizes who you are and links to your most important pages, written for AI systems to read. It is similar in spirit to robots.txt and sitemap.xml, but aimed at language models.

Last reviewed: November 2026.

What goes in it

• Your business name and a one-paragraph description.
• Where you are and who you serve.
• Links to key pages: services, pricing, contact, about, and your most useful guides, each with a one-line description.
• Facts you want stated consistently, such as your service area and how pricing works.

Keep it short, factual and in plain Markdown.

What it does not do

• It is not an official standard, and AI providers are not obliged to read it.
• It does not replace crawlable pages, structured data or a sitemap.
• It does not guarantee you will be mentioned by any assistant.

Is it worth adding?

For most businesses it takes under an hour and carries little risk, so it is a reasonable small step, as long as the facts match your website exactly. The bigger wins are still the basics in our AI search optimization guide.

How to add one

1. Write the file in Markdown.
2. Upload it to the root of your site so it loads at yoursite.com/llms.txt.
3. Update it whenever services, prices or locations change.
