Website Redesign Checklist for Service Businesses

A new website should bring in more enquiries. Done carelessly, a redesign can also wipe out search rankings you spent years building. Work through this list before, during and after.

Before you start

1. Write down the goal. More calls, more bookings, better-quality leads. Pick one or two measures.
2. Record a baseline. Current monthly enquiries, top pages and top search queries from Google Search Console.
3. List what works. Pages that rank, pages that convert and content customers mention.
4. Inventory every URL. Export the current list of pages so none are lost.

Content and structure

1. One page per main service, each with what it is, who it is for, pricing or how pricing works, areas served and how to book.
2. Real proof. Photos of your work, genuine reviews and project examples you have permission to share.
3. A clear next step on every page, such as call, book or request a quote.

SEO protection

1. Keep URLs where you can. If a URL changes, set a permanent (301) redirect from the old address to the new one.
2. Carry over titles and descriptions for pages that already perform, then improve them.
3. Keep important content in the page HTML, crawlable without scripts.
4. Submit the new sitemap in Google Search Console after launch.

Forms, tracking and speed

1. Test every form end to end, including the confirmation email and where the lead lands.
2. Set up analytics and conversion tracking before launch, not after.
3. Check speed on a phone.

After launch

1. Watch Search Console for errors and ranking drops for a few weeks.
2. Compare enquiries with your baseline after a month.
