Asking every happy customer for a review is one of the best local SEO habits. How to automate the ask, and what Google's policies do not allow.
How to Automate Review Requests Without Breaking Google's Rules
Reviews help local businesses show up and win the click. Most happy customers will leave one if you ask at the right moment and make it easy. Automation makes sure you always ask.
Last reviewed: November 2026.
When to ask
Right after the job is done or the appointment ends, while the experience is fresh. Trigger the request from the event that marks completion: a paid invoice, a closed job or a completed appointment.
How to ask
- Use the customer's name and mention the job.
- Include a direct link to your Google review form.
- Keep it to two or three sentences.
- Send one gentle reminder a few days later, then stop.
What not to do
Google's review policies prohibit offering incentives for reviews and selectively soliciting only positive reviews (often called review gating). Do not:
- offer discounts, gifts or entries into a draw for reviews,
- send requests only to customers you expect to be happy,
- write reviews yourself or ask staff to.
Ask every customer, and handle unhappy ones by fixing the problem.
Reply to reviews
Thank people for positive reviews. Reply to critical ones briefly, calmly and without sharing private details, and offer to resolve the issue offline.
Measure
Track requests sent, reviews received and your average rating over time in your Google Business Profile.
